New Mexico passenger bus crash kills 3, sends 22 to hospital

Multiple injuries were reported after a multi-vehicle crash involving a tour bus in New Mexico

Three people were killed and 24 others were injured in a crash involving a tour bus and three other vehicles on Interstate 25 in New Mexico, authorities said Sunday.

The Sandoval County Sheriff's Office said that the incident began at around 2 a.m. when a auto struck a pickup truck from behind just north of Bernalillo, about 18 miles north of Albuquerque.

An oncoming bus tried to dodge the ejected driver sprawled in the roadway, but the bus driver lost control and flipped into the northbound lanes. It was then sideswiped by a semitruck, according to Elder.

Photos show a mangled vehicle that's nearly entirely flattened and the bus on its side on Interstate 25 just north of Bernalillo, about 18 miles north of Albuquerque.

Its route wasn't immediately known and officials of the bus company didn't immediately comment on the accident.

Maxon didn't immediately know what caused the collision involving a passenger bus, a semitruck, a pickup truck and a vehicle. Officials with the El Paso - Los Angeles Limousine Express say there were 32 total passengers on the bus, along with two drivers. Its vehicles service cities in the Southwest and Mexico. Travelers who didn't require hospital treatment were placed on another bus.

"As hard as it's been for me, I keep in mind that what the passengers and their families have to go through is much worse", Rosenbaum said.

"The first unit arrived on scene to find a bus on its side with patients trapped inside", Maxon said.

Three people were killed and 22 others injured in a multi-vehicle crash near Bernalillo, New Mexico early Monday morning.

Eight patients were transported to Sandoval Regional Medical Center, and authorities say six were treated and released.

The fatal crash is leaving the Interstate closed in both directions as the investigation continues.
