Former British minister calls for second vote on Brexit to end stalemate

Tory party chaos Johnson and May

Writing in the Mail on Sunday - which backed a Remain vote in the 2016 referendum, unlike its weekday counterpart - the Prime Minister says her "message to the country this weekend is simple: we need to keep our eyes on the prize".

"The sooner that we can rise to the challenge of Brexit, find a way through, and recognise that in spite of the best efforts of many MPs, Parliament is stalemated".

May is now facing a possible rebellion from Brexit supporters in her Conservative Party who want her to ditch her plan when lawmakers vote on amendments to legislation on the government's post-Brexit customs regime on Monday.

Former worldwide development secretary Priti Patel, who is proposing one of four amendments to the Taxation (Cross-border Trade) Bill, told BBC Radio 4's Westminster Hour the white paper had "many flaws around our independence and our ability to make free trade agreements".

"It's very sad on a personal basis because I think he's something that's lacking in worldwide politics, a man of true character, fascinating, bright, intelligent and we had a good relationship".

Trump, in an interview with the Rupert Murdoch-owned Sun newspaper published just hours before he was due to have lunch with May, directly criticized May's Brexit strategy and heaped praise on Johnson, saying he "would be a great Prime Minister".

"I would have done it much differently. If they don't make the right deal she may do what I suggested but it's not an easy thing".

Mrs Greening, who was education secretary for two years, believes the PM's final deal should be voted on because the Commons is so split.

Theresa May hits back at her critics in her letter.

'I've put down some amendments and we'll see what support they get, ' he said on Sunday.

"I think it would've been great, but it's not too late for her to do that, necessarily".

"I wanted the prime minister's Chequers agreement to be a workable compromise", she wrote in The Times.

The U.S. president later said he hoped for a great trade deal with Britain after Brexit.

It was unclear whether they will actually press them to a vote after some pro-EU MPs backed Mrs May's Chequers plan and EU white paper. "Don't walk away from negotiations because then you're stuck", she added.

"And it enables us to build the new economic and security partnerships we want to see with the European Union".

The most talked-about of the four amendments proposes to make it illegal for the British taxman to collect duties for the European Union without reciprocal arrangements, after May proposed that the United Kingdom would collect tariffs on goods heading for the EU after Brexit.

But Brexiteers criticised the proposal and warned it would "extend the uncertainty" over Britain's divorce from Brussels.

Britain and the European Union would maintain a "common rulebook" for goods to ensure smooth trade including in agricultural, food and fisheries products.
