Mickelson 'wishes he could take back' US Open incident

Poulter works on his skills before the Pro Am event of the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open

American golfer Luke List was the unlikely leader after the first round as he equalled the Gullane course record with a seven-under-par 63.

The five-time major victor was four over par for his third round at Shinnecock Hills when he badly over-hit a putt on the 13th and, seeing that it would roll off the green, prevented that from occurring by running after his ball and hitting it while it was still moving. "That was just one of the worst ones".

Self-deprecating and repeatedly apologetic, Mickelson reiterated that he's "had a rough month" and that he's sorry for mistakes he's made.

It was a contrite Mickelson who appeared on this occasion after a first-round 70 left him a distant seven shots off the lead held by fellow American Luke List, with a sizeable gathering on 64 led by Rickie Fowler - victor of this title the last time it was the tournament was played here in 2015 - and Lee Westwood. Many observers believed he should have been disqualified or even withdrawn from the final round.

He was also penalised at the Greenbrier Classic last weekend for tapping down some long grass with his club.

Phil Mickelson follows the flight of his ball off the second tee at Gullane. Asked about it now he, finally, engaged properly with the question. I made a big mistake [at the US Open] and I wish I could take it back, but I can't. It wasn't a great moment and there's not much I can do about it now apart from just trying to act a little better.

So it's much easier to deal with than some of the times where I have not been involved in the decisions and had to deal with that.

In his most extensive comments since he purposely violated the Rules of Golf at Shinnecock Hills, Mickelson said whatever backlash he receives from players and the public was his own doing. "You have to be accountable for yourself". "I keep doing stuff like that".

"I had that rules deal at the Greenbrier last week and past year at Greenbrier I picked up my ball in the middle of the fairway and marked it and cleaned it".

"I've done that a bunch in my career". I do stuff like that. "That's the way my mind works".

"If you can do that when you don't feel quite as good, that's something and that gave me a bit of hope because I know generally, four days, I don't get four days of everything feeling great". It was not a great day. So I tend to do dumb stuff on my birthday, too. It took me a few days to kind of let it go.

"It was incredible. I was really excited with my time there because I think I got to see Carnoustie for its greatness, and it's firm and fast, and the bunkers were in play and very hard to avoid".
