Greyhound Canada will no longer provide bus services in B.C.

Greyhound Canada

Idriss estimates about 1,000 people moved to the community to work and many find getting out of town hard.

Grand Chief Sheila North said in the wake of Greyhound's July 9 announcement that it would no longer be doing business in Western Canada after October 31 that the organization, which represents a couple dozen First Nations in Manitoba's north, was extremely concerned by the news, given that vast distances between communities in the region and the high cost of airfare to the province's south make affordable bus service a crucial and possibly life-saving need.

"But simply put, the issue that we have seen is the routes in rural parts of Canada-specifically Western Canada-are just not sustainable anymore".

Western's Canada's transportation ministers say they will be looking to the federal government for assistance, following a meeting to talk about Greyhound's decision to withdraw service.

In a statement Monday, she said many in the province's Interior rely on the service, and that at no point had the company contacted the provincial government to talk about solutions. "It shouldn't come as a surprise that we've had problems but there was no funding commitment at that time", he said.

It also explains why Greyhound seemed content at its "temporary" bus station in some moose pasture (the VIA Rail terminal) out by the Yellowhead and 122 Street, having moved after the downtown bus station land was sold to Daryl Katz's ICE District development company.

"The company has experienced significant losses despite continued efforts to return to viability".

The company was started in 2015 and operates on a "lower demand model", because there is not a strong enough demand for full size coaches, said the company's owner and founder Kasper Wabinski in a phone call with CTV News.

Joe Hargrave said his government - which axed the STC previous year - had seen an industry-wide decrease in bus ridership.

"If Greyhound can't make it work, I don't know who can", he said. "How will they get access to adequate health care now?" said Grand Chief Arlen Dumas of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs.

Odelie Bernard-Labelle from Montreal was waiting at the Maritime Bus station in Halifax Wednesday, and said as a person without a vehicle, she sees buses as an important transportation option.

The only service left on the West Coast will be Vancouver to Seattle, which is operated by Greyhound Lines, Inc.

"The costs of flights are so much cheaper these days than they were 15 years ago", he said. One of the affected routes included a notorious stretch of Highway 16 in B.C. known as the Highway of Tears, where many Indigenous women have gone missing over the years.
