FBI Agent Peter Strzok Faces Off with Lawmakers in Contentious Hearing

FBI Deputy Assistant Director Peter Strzok prepares to testify on Thursday

Former FBI lawyer Lisa Page was questioned behind closed doors on Friday just hours after FBI agent Peter Strzok had been grilled in a raucous 10-hour public hearing, and Republicans said they learned new information from a witness who was able to talk more freely than Strzok.

Several GOP lawmakers questioned Strzok about text messages he exchanged with now-former Federal Bureau of Investigation lawyer Lisa Page that revealed their dislike of President TrumpDonald John TrumpGiuliani: Trump interview with Mueller "further away" ACLU calls for Trump officials to hand over info on immigrant children Kushner to join Pompeo for meetings with Mexican leaders MORE during the 2016 campaign.

"These were his words, [when] he sat in front of us for eight hours, nine hours and denied there was any bias". The 26-year Federal Bureau of Investigation veteran Strzok faced myriad attacks on his professional and personal life from House Republicans over his text messages and affair with former Federal Bureau of Investigation lawyer Lisa Page.

"This information had the potential to derail and quite possibly defeat Mr. Trump, but the thought of expressing that, or exposing that information never crossed my mind", Efe quoted Mr Strzok as telling to lawmakers during a congressional hearing.

"The only reason we know about it is that these kinds of things were going on on official phones that were discoverable", the congressman added.

In one text, Strzok said "we'll stop" Trump in the midst of the 2016 presidential election.

Strzok said he could not answer a question about the early stages of the FBI investigation into Russian intervention because the probe is still ongoing and FBI counsel had instructed him not to. Both Strzok and Page were booted from Mueller's investigation a year ago after he discovered their texts. "It was Republican Jason Chaffetz, former chairman of my committee". "No he won't. We'll stop it".

Several Democrats gasped, shouting at Gohmert, "That is outrageous!" and "Shame on you!".

Strzok and Page had worked on the FBI's Russian Federation investigation and on the early days of Mueller's special counsel team.

House Democrats accused Republicans of using Strzok to undermine special counsel Robert S. Mueller III's investigation.

"I have always told the truth", Strzok said.

Today Lisa Page will be questioned by members of Congress in a closed-door session, having had the benefit of watching Strzok's testimony on Thursday. But the report said it found no evidence of political bias in the FBI's decision to not pursue criminal charges against Clinton. Strzok's lawyer has said he was escorted from the Federal Bureau of Investigation building as the disciplinary process winds its way through the system.
