5-Year-Old Writes His Own Obituary Before Dying of Cancer

RIP Garrett

A courageous five-year-old boy helped pen his own obituary before he lost his battle with cancer, saying: "When I die, I'm going to be a gorilla". They knew then that they didn't want their fun-loving son to have a traditional funeral or obituary. "I'm going to have bouncy houses at mine", Emilie recalled. An idea was born, and together the family started planning Garrett's send-off when his cancer was declared terminal in June.

Before then, as his parents, Ryan and Emilie Matthias told the Des Moines Register, they had asked Garrett a series of questions about his favorite things and his least favorite things, his favorite people and his favorite superheroes.

Under "the things I love most", Garrett stated: "Playing with my sister, my blue bunny, thrash metal, Legos, my daycare friends, Batman and when they put me to sleep before they access my port". It also lays out what he meant to do once he died.

"You know, why does it have to be sad?" his mother tearfully told the station.

The obit closes with his last message, "See ya' later, suckas!"

Speaking to WHOTV, Ryan said the words printed in the moving obituary sound exactly like his son talking to him and Emilie.

"When I die", Garrett said, "I am going to be a gorilla and throw poo at Daddy!" A GoFundMe for the Matthias family has so far raised more than $33,000; Garrett's full obituary is here. And in terms of being either "burned of buried", he says: "I want to be burned (like when Thor's Mommy died) and made into a tree so I can live in it when I'm a gorilla".

Kevin Anderson vs John Isner, Wimbledon 2018 semi-final
Isner won the match, and now 14 years on here they both are on Centre Court, competing for a place in the Wimbledon final. Isner was representing the university of Georgia, while Anderson was at the university of IL .

In his final farewell, he wrote about his favorite superheroes - Batman, Thor, Iron Man, Hulk and Cyborg - and how he wanted to be a professional boxer when he grows up.

"We never necessarily talked about his funeral so we never had the conversation with him that he was going to die, but we had a lot of conversations around it", Emilie told WPLG.

Under his dislikes Garrett listed needles, trousers and his "stupid dirty cancer", among other things. "Garrett was a very unique individual".

For nine months, the Iowa boy fought for his life against a rare form of pediatric cancer.

A celebration of life to honor Garrett's wishes will take place on Saturday, July 14th from 5 p.m. - 11 p.m.at 2377 132 Court in Van Meter.

"The reality for Garrett and so many other children is pediatric cancer is an ugly, nasty beast that leaves a path of destruction", they wrote. "From whoopy cushions and sneaking clothes pins on their clothes to "hazing" the interns and new staff doctors, he was forever a prankster".

"I want to be burned (like when Thor's Mommy died) and made into a tree so I can live in it when I'm a gorilla". For Garrett and many others before him - cancer kills.
