U.S. news savages Trump over Brexit interview ahead of May talks

President Donald Trump has dismissed his controversial interview with The Sun newspaper in which he criticized British Prime Minister Theresa May's handling of Brexit and praised her Conservative Party rival Boris Johnson, as "fake news".

Trump once again claimed that he predicted Brexit - although the truth is that as presidential nominee at the time, he had no real understanding of the complex referendum that is set to see the United Kingdom exit the European Union.

There are street protests of Trump's first visit to Britain since taking office almost 18 months ago.

May was at pains to impress Trump and planned to push for a trade deal in their meeting - an accord which had seemed like a foregone conclusion in the early stages of their relationship.

She wrote on Twitter: "The divisive, dog-whistle rhetoric in his TheSun interview is repulsive". Some signs read "Dump Trump", "Lock Him Up" and "There Will Be Hell Toupee".

On the very day when she sought to rally Conservative troops behind her plans for European Union withdrawal, the US President threw his considerable weight behind those who accuse her of betraying Brexit. "She wanted to go a different route", he told the paper. "And that is fine".

Trump spoke out against the balloon and against London mayor Sadiq Khan, who approved its launch.

"I look at cities in Europe, and I can be specific if you'd like".

"I cherish the special relationship with the USA and the many Americans who contribute to our city", posted Khan, London's first Muslim mayor.

In the interview, which took place at the U.S. Embassy in Brussels, the president also lashed out at the Muslim mayor of London, saying he had done "a bad job".

'Boris Johnson's a friend of mine, he's been very nice to me, very supportive and maybe I'll speak to him when I get over there. "He obviously likes me, and says very good things about me", he said.

"They didn't put it in the headline, I wish they put that in the headline, that's one of those things".

"I think allowing millions and millions of people to come into Europe is very, very sad", the president said.

For supporters, Trump and Brexit offer the prospect of breaking free from what they see as obsolete institutions and rules.

Opposition lawmakers, backed by an online petition signed by almost 1.9 million people, called on May to cancel the state visit, which is estimated to cost between £8m and £10m in security and policing.

And she is left with the worry that the very man whose help she needs to deliver a dividend from Brexit may be actively conniving with those seeking to unseat her.

Trump also said that former Foreign Secretary Johnson - who disagrees with May on Brexit and resigned this week - would make a "great prime minister", adding: "I think he's got what it takes". "His city operations team have met with the organizers and have given them permission to use Parliament Square Garden as a grounding point for the blimp".
