Trump says North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members have agreed to spending increases

US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull

U.S. President Donald Trump closed out his chaotic two-day visit to NATO Thursday by declaring victory, claiming that member nations caved to his demands to significantly increase defence spending and reaffirming his commitment to the alliance.

President Trump says he will discuss Syria and nuclear proliferation with Putin.

Later in the press conference, Trump slammed reporter Kristen Welker after a question about Russian Federation.

Trump also said that he was "very saddened" to see Johnson was leaving government and said he hoped "he goes back in at some point".

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Thursday, though, said the discussion "made NATO stronger", as it "created a new sense of urgency".

"Prior to a year ago, where I attended my last meeting it was going down, the amount of money being spent by countries was going down and down very substantially", he said. "I get thousands of notifications from people in the UK that they love the President of the United States".

He used the forum to again blast the "rigged witch hunt", his term for Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling and potential collusion with Trump campaign associates in the 2016 presidential election, saying it "hurts" USA and Russian relations.

Mr Trump is due to face a press conference later in the day. I am just saying I think he would be a great Prime Minister.

But since coming to power past year, Trump has sought to improve relations with Putin amid tensions between Moscow and the West. "She said: "Don't worry, it's only the press".

The Bulgarian President, formerly the commander of the Air Force before being elected head of state on a ticket backed by the opposition socialists, used Trump's statements to take a sideswipe at Bulgaria'scentre-right government, saying that Bulgaria was "reluctant" to allocate funds to the armed forces.

Trump also said that former Foreign Secretary Johnson - who disagrees with May on Brexit and resigned this week - would make a "great prime minister", adding: "I think he's got what it takes". While denying Putin's role, Trump has blamed President Barack Obama for not doing enough to stop it.

Trump also lashed out at his longtime nemesis, London Mayor Sadiq Khan, a Muslim who has criticized Trump's ban on travel to the United States from several predominately Muslim countries.

"I let them know I was extremely unhappy with what was happening and they have substantially upped their commitment and now we are happy and have a powerful, strong North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, much stronger than it was two days ago", he said.

The British government on Thursday published its long-awaited Brexit blueprint aimed at restarting stalled talks with the European Union, only for it to be panned by eurosceptics, the City of London and the USA president.

Interestingly, older people are more likely to think Mr Trump was wrong to express his opinions on Brexit, but young people are more likely to think that Britain would be unwise to trust him in trade negotiations.

After Trump's interview was published, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said the president "likes and respects Prime Minister May very much", adding that he had "never said anything bad about her".
