Officials Conduct Demolition of Cape Canaveral Air Force Station Launch Towers

Watch: Demolition of twin towers at Cape Canaveral's historic Launch Complex 17

In a matter of seconds, two towers at Launch Complex 17 in Cape Canaveral collapsed in a cloud of dust Thurday morning, brought down by controlled explosions.

It's considered to be twin landmarks with plenty of history.

As local newsgroup Florida Today reports, the demolition went smoothly, with a pair of huge launch towers and gantries falling lopsided under their own weight.

The demolition has been planned for years. The newspaper reports it was postponed from past year.

"We have launched some super-exciting missions - Mars missions, all sorts of Global Positioning System missions, missions to all sorts of fun planets - so it is definitely a little emotional for me to see", Scott Messer explained to Florida Today.

The towers' demolition came almost seven years after the last launch at the site - when Delta II sent a pair of gravity mapping probes to the moon for NASA in September, 2011.

Cape Canaveral has always been a cherished place for the United States space program, having hosted some of the most important space missions stretching back decades.

For years the towers were known for their distinctive red colouring until anti-corrosive coatings were applied in the early 90s.

Complex 17 will soon be home to a new tenant - Moon Express, a private company that plans to perform tests of a lunar lander.
