Egyptian archaeologists prepare to open huge mystery sarcophagus unearthed in Alexandria

What's Inside This Massive Egyptian Sarcophagus

The sarcophagus, which was discovered on July 1 during construction work, weighs around 30 tons, is nearly two metres high and three metres in length, and is the largest of its kind to be discovered in the ancient Egyptian city of Alexandria.

The tomb, which is believed to date to the Ptolemaic period, running roughly from 305 B.C.to 30 B.C., was found about 16 feet below ground during archaeological excavations ahead of construction of a new building, Smithsonian said.

Under Egyptian law, due to the vast history which is associated with the country, construction firms are required to commission an archaeological dig on site before they begin building.

According to Sky News, the sarcophagus measures 265cm (104in) long, 185cm (72in) tall, and 165cm (65in) wide, making it the largest ever discovered in the city of Alexandria. Also found in the tomb was a worn alabaster bust, perhaps a depiction of the man whose body was buried in the coffin.

According to Dr Ayman Ashmawy, the thick mortar between the sarcophagus and the surface indicates it had not been opened since it was closed around 35 BCE. "Maybe his name will be written inside or maybe there will be some inscriptions, and maybe we will find a mummy or wooden coffin, or maybe we will find nothing", Waziri added.

It was noted a few months back that the game's sales surpassed other Capcom greats, such as Resident Evil. They announced a computer-animated special, today.

While the tomb likely belonged to a noble man, not a king, its discovery gave hope to experts who believe that the tomb of Alexander might one day be found in modern Alexandria, which is built on top of ancient city he founded.

The find is considered to be extraordinarily rare as many older tombs have been plundered by criminals and thieves over the centuries.

"The sarcophagus goes back more or less 2,000 years".
