Across six seasons of its original run, Downton Abbey - set in the wealthy Crawley family's country estate as it followed their intricate lives as well as those of the servants they employed at the turn of the 20th century - garnered a steady worldwide following and sustained critical acclaim.

Brian Percival ("The Book Thief"), who directed the original series' pilot, will direct the film.

Joanne Froggatt, who played lady's maid Anna Bates, tweeted a photograph of herself alongside fellow cast members Michelle Dockery (who played Lady Mary Crawley) and Dame Maggie Smith (who played Lady Crawley), writing: "Delighted to announce we're getting the band back together!" Fellowes will produce alongside Gareth Neame and Liz Trubridge. "Julian's script charms, thrills and entertains and in Brian Percival's hands we aim to deliver everything that one would hope for as "Downton' comes to the big screen". Series creator Julian Fellowes wrote the screenplay and will produce.

The movie will go into production later this summer at Highclere Castle in Hampshire, England, the main filming location for the show. Launched in November to huge visitor attendance, rapturous fan feedback and extraordinary critical acclaim, the Exhibition showcases the enduring global appeal of Downton via a stunning recreation of the house, the fashion and the history of the era.

It received a special Bafta tribute in 2015 and won three Golden Globes, 15 Primetime Emmy Awards and 69 Emmy nominations. The show was showered with awards, from Emmys to BAFTAs to Golden Globes - some more deserved than others - but it was always a joy to watch, even when it was occasionally ridiculous (the less said about Patrick the mystery man in bandages or Matthew's unbelievable "I've been paralyzed but I can definitely suddenly stand and catch a falling woman" miracle the better).
