Whitney Houston's mum expresses 'shock' over abuse claims

Cissy Houston

In the new Whitney documentary, in which director Kevin Macdonald interviewed over 70 of the music icon's closest family and friends, allegations are made that claim Whitney and her elder half-brother, Gary Garland, were molested by their cousin, Dee Dee Warwick, when they were children and that Whitney remained traumatized throughout adulthood. The abuse allegedly happened when Whitney was a young girl. Now, following the film's debut at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year and recent theatrical release, Cissy Houston - Whitney's 84-year-old mother and Dee Dee's aunt - has issued a statement to PEOPLE slamming the project's depiction of her daughter's life.

"We can not reconcile the Public's need to know about Whitney's life as justification for invasion of her privacy or the charge against Dee Dee, a charge which neither Whitney nor Dee Dee is here to deny, refute or affirm", the statement continues.

Dee Dee Warwick died in 2008.

Texas couple considering divorce to help pay for daughter's health care costs
An Army veteran and his wife are considering a divorce - just so that they can afford health care for their disabled daughter, according to a report.

In a statement to People magazine on behalf of herself and sister, singer Dionne Warwick, Cissy Houston revealed they first learned of the claims two days before the documentary "Whitney" premiered in May. In the film, Mary Jones, her personal assistant, says she told the singer, "You've got to tell your mother Dee Dee molested you".

Read the full statement here. "I made a decision to share the story so that people might understand that throughout her entire life Whitney carried this with her, and the weight of it was vast", she continued. "I deeply love and respect Dionne, Cissy and their entire families, and my intention was never to embarrass anyone in the family, but rather to bring to light that Whitney was subjected to something painful and troubling as a child". "Whitney was a wonderful woman, an angel, and she did not drag herself down all alone-there was a cause".

The Whitney documentary is now available to see in theaters now.
