Welcome news for Tom Petty fans all over the world.
When Tom Petty died unexpectedly last fall, the 66-year-old singer left behind a almost 50-year catalog, from early garage-rock excursions with Mudcrutch to inescapable pop hits with The Heartbreakers to gentle solo folk-pop material.
Curated by the star's family and bandmates, the 60-song An American Treasure, due out September 28, is no greatest-hits set - Petty had enough of those to begin with.
The box set will contain about a dozen unreleased songs taken for Petty's extensive archive, as well as alternate versions of classic songs, rarities, recordings of live performances and deep cuts.
As opposed to some of the more obvious cash-in endeavors we've seen in the past, An American Treasure looks like it was a real labor of love, having been assembled by the singer's daughter Adria Petty, and his wife, Dana Petty as well his Heartbreaker bandmates Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench with additional guidance from his studio collaborator, Ryan Ulyate.
Considering the length of American Treasure, it seems likely that it could include the second disc of an expanded version of the 1995 album Wildflowers that was announced in 2015 but has not been released.
'The criteria was songs that we all felt really said something about dad, ' Adria Petty revealed in an interview with CBS News 'It's such a odd thing to lose someone like him.
American Treasure is out 9/28.
It dates from the beginnings of the Heartbreakers to recent years, which presumably would make the set a collaborative release between Universal (which owns the rights to Petty's early material issued on Shelter or Backstreet/MCA Records) and Warner Music, which released his music from 1994 on. The Super Deluxe Limited Edition of the set will feature a 84-page book featuring photographs, an essay, and original handwritten lyrics by Petty.
