Thailand Cave Rescue Successfully Concluded

Narongsak promises last 5 survivors to be extracted faster tomorrow

The flooded nature of the caves means that parts of the route of the dive are particularly unsafe, not only to the young boys, but also to the experienced divers, one of whom died last week while transporting oxygen tanks to the cave.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha dismissed rumours on Tuesday that the boys had been drugged to facilitate the operation, saying the children had not been given anaesthetic.

He also thanked the King and the Royal family for extending their support during times of crisis, like these. Thirteen foreign divers and five members of Thailand's elite navy SEAL unit make up the main team guiding the boys to safety through narrow, submerged passageways that claimed the life of a former Thai navy diver on Friday.

"His honour, sacrifice and legacy will always be in our hearts", added Prayut.

The 12 boys, all part of a youth soccer team, went missing with their 25-year-old coach more than two weeks ago. British divers found the 13, huddled on a muddy bank in a partly flooded chamber several kilometres inside the complex, on Monday last week.

"On behalf of the United States, congratulations to the Thai Navy SEALs and all on the successful rescue of the 12 boys and their coach from the treacherous cave in Thailand. Such a attractive moment - all freed, great job!"

His performances were at times overshadowed by the criticism he received for theatrically reacting to tackles and physical attention.

Two of the boys were showing symptoms of lung infections but the four boys from the first group rescued were all walking around their hospital beds.

A second rescue operation was carried out the following day by the same team of divers, and took only nine hours to bring out the next four, the report said. But Monday, the rain set back in while four more youngsters were extracted from the cave system, bringing the total number of rescued boys to eight.

The rescue operation, which commenced on Sunday, was carried out in three phases.

Rescuers began the operation at 4am United Kingdom time and are determined to get them out of the Tham Luang Cave in Chiang Rai, northern Thailand, before monsoon rains that could last until October make any evacuation impossible.

Heavy rain has been intermittent in the region over the last three days but further downpours could disrupt the removal of the remaining boys and their coach.

Two more boys reportedly left the cave complex a short time later and were transferred to a medical facility on site, followed soon after by a fourth boy, says an eyewitness stationed at the entrance to the cave.
