Stop Taking Multivitamins to Help Your Heart. Researchers Say They Don't Work
Taking multivitamin and mineral supplements do not prevent heart attacks, strokes or cardiovascular death. Food and Drug Administration for either safety or effectiveness - affect heart health.
"Simply put, multivitamins and mineral supplements do not improve cardiovascular health outcomes, so [they] should not be taken for that goal", added Kim.
He said: "I hope our study findings help decrease the hype around multivitamin and mineral supplements and encourage people to use proven methods to reduce their risk of cardiovascular diseases - such as eating more fruits and vegetables, exercising and avoiding tobacco".
In the study, the researchers analyzed the results of 18 previously published studies that involved over 2 million individuals from the United States, Germany, France, Sweden, and Japan.
In response, the Council on Responsible Nutrition, a supplement trade group, said, "multivitamins fill nutrient gaps in our less-than-perfect diets" and "are not meant to serve as magic bullets".
The lack of any apparent heart health benefit was seen across the board, regardless of age or gender. He noted that upwards of 100 million American men and women take vitamins or supplements "frequently based on the misguided belief that doing so can improve their heart and vascular health".

The largely unregulated supplement industry is doing a booming business, with a projected value of $278 billion by 2024, Kim's team noted.
However, there are a number of previously published studies that suggest that multivitamins and minerals aren't actually worth it when it comes to the health of the heart. Fruits and vegetables already have a proven track record in lowering the risk of heart disease and stroke.
Dr. Eduardo Sanchez, the American Heart Association's chief medical officer for prevention and chief of the Association's Centers for Health Metrics and Evaluation, who was not a part of this study, commented: "Eat a healthy diet for a healthy heart and a long, healthy life".
"There are also widely available and affordable once daily cardiovascular protective medications such as statins that, in eligible individuals, can safely and effectively lower risk", he said.
Kim commented that despite the growing scientific evidence, it has so far been "exceptionally difficult" to spread the message that multivitamins and minerals don't prevent heart disease-even among nutritional experts.
Rebecca McManamon, consultant dietitian and spokeswoman for the British Dietetic Association, said: "This reiterates the message that instead of supplements, in the United Kingdom we are still not all eating enough fruit and vegetables and we need to keep driving to eat more, as five portions a day or more are linked with a reduced risk of heart disease, as well as reducing risk of some cancers".
