Serena Williams to face Angelique Kerber in the Wimbledon Ladies' final

Serena Williams rallies to reach Wimbledon semifinals

Goerges is at the other end of the spectrum, preparing for her maiden major semi-final after also recovering from a set down to beat Dutchwoman Kiki Bertens 3-6 7-5 6-1. Angelique Kerber of Germany prevailed over Daria Kasatkina of Russian Federation 6/3; 7/5.

'The fans on Court One will love seeing [Federer], maybe Centre Court ticket holders will be upset, but they have two brilliant matches to look forward to. The reprieve was only momentary for Hsieh, as Cibulkova regained her composure to break and take the first set, 6-4. It also means she now has 90 Wimbledon wins, the most amongst active female players and she has not dropped a set yet in this tournament.

The same could be said of both Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal, who, like Serena, continue to find new levels of quality despite their relative age in tennis.

The second followed a similar pattern with Williams taking a 3-1 lead.

Williams advanced with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Camila Giorgi of Italy.

She then gained an early break in the second set on her way to the win. Camila served brilliantly to reduce the tally but the Serena's unrelenting attack sustained the gap to 5-3. When she served for it a second time, she needed to navigate a 16-point game that included five deuces and all of those match points, until forcing a forehand error on the last. Ostapenko threw four more errors into her next service game to hand the German the first set.

In contrast, Goerges is in the Wimbledon semi-finals for the first time.

Kerber was beaten by Williams in the 2016 Wimbledon showpiece.

It brings to an end a saga that has stretched several months, with the Catalan side having always been linked with the Frenchman. The French worldwide joined Sevilla from Nancy in January 2017 and scored four goals in 52 games last season.

Kerber, the German 11th seed, took control on Centre Court, breaking serve twice to claim the opening set 6-3 in 34 minutes.

Japan's Kei Nishikori beat Ernests Gulbis in four sets to set up a match-up with Novak Djokovic, who has quietly been playing well at the tournament.

Williams is playing only her fourth tournament since returning to the Tour after giving birth to daughter Alexis Olympia nine months ago and arrived with a ranking of 181, although she was bumped up to the 25th seed.

Only three mothers have won Grand Slam titles in the Open era - Belgium's Kim Clijsters and Australians Evonne Goolagong Cawley and Margaret Court - but Williams is showing strong evidence that she can become the fourth.

But this is uncharted territory for Goerges, who was in her first Grand Slam semi-final after losing in the first round on her five previous visits to Wimbledon.
