Puerto Rican T-shirt video controversy results in officer's resignation

Officer resigns after dispute over Puerto Rican shirt

A police officer seen in a video "doing nothing", while a woman was being harassed by a drunk man for wearing a Puerto Rico flag shirt, has resigned.

A park police officer in Chicago has been assigned to desk duty while officials investigate his response to a woman who said she was being harassed for wearing a shirt with the Puerto Rican flag. Are you a citizen?'

"That officer did absolutely nothing - he did absolutely zero", Ms Irizarry said in her 36-minute long Facebook live broadcast. She asks a park police officer to help, saying, "I am renting this area and he's harassing me about the shirt that I'm wearing".

She added that Connor had been "very stressed" in the wake of the viral video.

In the part of the video that went viral, Connor's voice is never heard and he apparently does nothing. After the ordeal, she was issued a refund, and the county gave Irizarry hzoo passes to the Brookfield Zoo, which is owned by the Cook County Forest Preserve District. Connor is seen walking away.

Forest Preserves Superintendent Arnold Randall said he "vehemently disagreed" with Connor that he handled the situation properly.

Trybus is facing a misdemeanor assault charge. At one point, Irizarry's brother approached Connor while the deputy stood next to Trybus, and Connor could be clearly heard saying, "Hey don't you dare walk over here, okay?" In the video, Irizarry is approached by a man, identified by authorities as 62-year-old Timothy Trybus, who tells her she should not be wearing the Puerto Rican flag shirt in the USA, and asks "Are you a citizen?"

'We will be looking into this incident as our offices in DC are in contact with local and state authorities, demanding that this officer be expelled from the police force, ' Rosello tweeted on Tuesday.

Kenedy: Newcastle sign Brazilian midfielder on season-long loan
Kenedy becomes Newcastle's third signing of the summer, following the additions of Martin Dubravka and Ki Sung-yueng. Benitez is hopeful Kenedy can start where he left off last season.

The man, later identified as Timothy Trybus, has been charged with assault and disorderly conduct.

Then she says: "Officer, I'm renting, I paid for a permit for this area. I do not feel comfortable with him here, is there anything you can do?" It says all visitors should feel safe.

"You're not American, if you were American you wouldn't wear that", Trybus says to her. "You know that right?"

A viral video shows an IL man harassing a woman in a public park for wearing a t-shirt bearing the flag of Puerto Rico.

But the officer continues to do nothing or even move closer to Irizzary as the man continues to approach her.

Eventually the first officer on the scene takes notes of Irizarry's account of the incident and says that he was at the scene due to the separate incident, noting that she was not being attacked though acknowledging she felt threatened.

'I'm an American citizen.I'm not trying to change anyone, I just came here for a birthday party, ' Irizzary tells him as he gets in her face.

Almost half of Americans are unaware that Puerto Ricans are United States citizens, according to polling taken after the island was rocked by a hurricane last September.
