Man Utd legend Scholes: Guardiola big influence on England success

Paul Scholes highlights the best thing Gareth Southgate has done as manager

Former Manchester United star Paul Scholes has heaped glowing praise on Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, whom he feels is partly responsible for England's success in reaching the World Cup semi-finals for the first time in 28 years.

Gareth Southgate has led the English charge in Russian Federation as they are just two days away from playing their first World Cup semi-final in 28 years.

"I think he is, definitely [an influence on the England team]", said Scholes.

"I don't think Gareth (Southgate) has made any secret of that".

"He wants to know how he produces that type of football".

Scholes continued "As an England fan and a former England player, we want to see the best football possible".

Croatia tops England for its 1st World Cup final
May received the number 10 jersey of Croatia captain Luka Modric . "There's no weakness in a team that is in the final". Scenes in Zagreb after Croatia qualified for the semi-final.

That Manchester City are playing the best football in the division is no coincidence. "However, we can say that Belgium has a similar style to Manchester City in the sense that we like to play with the ball and attack". "Why not try to copy that kind of play?"

In the lead-up to the World Cup, Southgate was pictured on several occasions at the Etihad Stadium, keeping tabs on the likes of Kyle Walker, John Stones and Raheem Sterling.

The fact that the original plan was to head into this tournament with Allardyce does add a little bit more happiness to the whole thing (or possibly relief), especially when people are now discussing the influence of Pep Guardiola on the England side.

"Who coaches our youngest players?"

"He's been an innovator". When I watch kids' football now, when they can get on pitches that aren't flooded or frozen, I see them playing out from the back. Is Neymar's reputation done?

Instead, England face Croatia on Wednesday for a place in the World Cup final - and doesn't that just sound incredible?
