House GOP weighs contempt against key witness in Federal Bureau of Investigation probes

Report: 2 House Committees Will Interview Lisa Page This Week

Peter Strzok and Lisa Page are due to appear before the House Judiciary Committee and House Oversight Committee, to answer questions about anti-Trump text messages they'd exchanged, which led to them being taken off the investigating team - but there have been conflicting reports about whether the pair will show up for the hearings.

President Donald Trump attacked a former FBI lawyer on Wednesday after she failed to testify on allegations of anti-Trump bias in the FBI's investigation of him.

Jeffress said she received a message from the Department of Justice at 11 p.m. on Tuesday night granting Page's request to review documents related to the investigation.

"We asked the committee staff to explain the scope of the investigation and provide sufficient notice that would allow her to prepare, which are normal conditions for congressional committees, but these committees have not followed the normal process", Jeffress said.

House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte, the Virginia Republican, said Page had known for months about an interview, and the committee would use "all tools at our disposal" to obtain it.

Ryan said the House would "do what we need to do to protect this branch of government" and that he backed Goodlatte. But a subpoena to testify before Congress is not optional. Ryan and others have threatened contempt several times over the past year as other witnesses have defied subpoenas in the House intelligence committee's now-closed Russian Federation investigation and as the Justice Department has withheld documents, but they have yet to hold a vote on it.

It is unclear if Page will appear.

"This investigation is a political charade-a platform to elevate far-right conspiracy theories and undermine the Special Counsel's ongoing criminal investigation of the President and his campaign aides, which has already produced five guilty pleas and criminal charges against 23 individuals and entities", said Representative Jerrold Nadler, the ranking member of the Committee on the Judiciary. Trump tweeted. "Wow, but is anybody really surprised!"

In a statement released Wednesday, Amy Jeffress said Page requires more time.

"How can the Rigged Witch Hunt proceed when it was started, influenced and worked on, for an extended period of time, by former FBI Agent/Lover Peter Strzok?".

But back to the tweet for a second. Both were removed from the Mueller probe past year after the Justice Department's internal watchdog made the special counsel aware of the anti-Trump messages.

He is scheduled to appear again in a public hearing Thursday morning.

The Judiciary and Oversight panels have already spent much of the summer holding hearings and interviews critical of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Justice Department. Following that report and the firing of Comey by Trump, the Department of Justice Inspector General launched an investigation.
