From Greenland broke off a six-kilometer-long iceberg

Dramatic Video Captures Moment Towering Iceberg Splits from Greenland Glacier

News of rising sea levels and temperatures have become so common in headlines and reports, it is possible that the general public is becoming desensitised to it all. This can give researchers a sense of how the overall global climate is changing.

A new video - captured by a team of New York University researchers and shared online this week - shows the dramatic calving event.

A 2017 estimate indicated that if the entire Western Antarctic Ice Sheet collapsed, sea levels would rise about three metres.

"Global sea-level rise is both undeniable and consequential".

The team was observing the edge of the Helheim Glacier, one of Greenland's largest outlet glaciers and the fastest flowing glacier along the eastern edge of the Greenland Ice Sheet.

Scientists have managed to capture on film the moment a huge iceberg breaks away from a glacier in eastern Greenland.

Previously HB reported that an worldwide group of scientists found that the rate of melting of the Antarctic sheets of ice has accelerated threefold in the last five years.

These fractures caused by sea level rising also indicate another strong repercussion for the upcoming years is that as these breaks continue to happen it will also be harder to control and predict how much and how often this will occur in the future. New video could help make more accurate predictions about calving events. Meanwhile, smaller pinnacle icebergs, which are tall and thin, can be seen calving off and flipping over. The camera angle then shifts to show movement further down the fjord, where one tabular iceberg crashes into a second, causing the first to split into two and flip over.

"The range of these different iceberg formation styles helps us build better computer models for simulating and modeling iceberg calving", said Holland.

Denise Holland, a research team field manager with NYU, caught the eye-opening occurrence on video, which condenses 30 minutes of activity down to about 90 seconds.
