Border Protection says NYC mayor crossed border illegally

Crash following high speed chase of human smuggler

But the mayor's office contended that de Blasio had permission to cross the border.

Border protection claimed New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and Austin Mayor Adler illegally crossed the border between Mexico and the United States during that visit, according to a letter Fox News said was sent on June 25.

A group of about 20 mayors visited the border near El Paso, Texas, on June 21, one day after President Donald Trump signed an executive order to stop his administration from separating migrant families at the border.

De Blasio spokesman Eric Phillips responded to the accusations by denying the Mayor illegally crossed the border.

De Blasio has criticized Trump's "zero tolerance" immigration policy, even calling for the abolition of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.

According to the letter, a uniformed Border Patrol agent noticed a group on the Rio Grande River flood plain south of the Tornillo, Texas, Port of Entry, taking photos of the holding facility.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio says allegations that he and his security detail illegally crossed the U.S. -Mexico border last month are "absolutely ridiculous". But the group disregarded that order and drove back to Mexico, AP reports.

"We fully expect to not be told the truth, we fully expect to be turned away the way senators and congressmen have been turned away just trying to get the honest truth about what's happening to these children just as all of you have been doing", de Blasio said at a press conference at the time. He then went to Mexico and crossed into the U.S.to get a view of the facility.

Border Patrol agents who were rescuing a distressed pregnant woman in Texas on Saturday were attacked by rocks thrown by illegal immigrants, officials said.

The accusations surrounding Mr de Blasio's border crossing come amidst continued controversy surrounding the almost 3,000 children who have been split from undocumented adults entering the US. In an appearance on MSNBC's Rachel Maddow show, de Blasio said that these children are suffering psychologically and physically from the immigration policy.

Phillips had posted tweets of the mayor's visit on June 21.

A spokesman for the Border Protection had no comment. "ICE is broken, it's divisive and it should be abolished", de Blasio tweeted.
