BBC's Stephen Nolan earned more than £400,000 previous year

However, the list does not include the BBC's best paid actors and comedians.

He replaces Chris Evans at the top, who is shown to be earning between £1.6 million and £1,669,999 for his Radio 2 Breakfast show.

The broadcaster said the split between the highest-earning men and women presenters had narrowed to 60:40 and has set a target of 50:50 by 2020.

The list showed that Norton's salary fell from £850,000-£899,999 to £600,000-£609,999.

The BBC presenter Stephen Nolan earned between £400,000 and £409,999 in 2017-18.

The BBC argues that the list does not reflect the true balance of payments to men and women as salaries through BBC Studios, which is not funded by the licence fee and became a commercial entity, are not revealed.

However, the 46-year-old's salary is likely to be higher than this figure, with her earnings for Strictly Come Dancing not being included.

It also says that changes to pay packets in recent months are also not reflected as the list is compiled from salaries up to April this year.

There were also no women featured in the band of earnings above £500,000 past year. She was on £150,000-£199,999 a year ago.

Cardi B announces birth of daughter and reveals name

Last year's report, which was the first time the BBC disclosed the salaries of on-air talent earning more than £150,000, saw 34 women being featured on the 96-person list.

Maitlis, who was absent past year despite co-host Evan Davis appearing, took home between £220,000 and £229,999.

Mr Nolan presented about 210 programmes on BBC Radio Ulster, 150 on BBC Radio 5 Live and 20 editions of the television show Nolan Live. After 12 months of male stars accepting pay cuts, the proportion of women on the corporation's "rich list" has declined.

The disclosure today of BBC salaries poses something of a riddle.

Winkleman was eighth previous year but has now dropped to 13th as a result of a shake-up of the corporation's structure.

It catapulted the broadcaster into turmoil, with respected China editor Carrie Gracie resigning over unequal pay.

The BBC first published a list of its highest earners in July 2017, after the government ordered the corporation to reveal the names and salaries of its on air-talent earning above £150,000 a year ago.

The BBC also states how many programmes its highest paid presenters worked on during the year.

The recent figures suggest the corporation has reduced its gender pay gap by almost a fifth.
