Asteroid fragment discovered in Botswana

A fragment of asteroid 2018 LA which entered Earth’s atmosphere

The 1st meteorite was found after 5 days of walking and scouring a landscape of sand, thick tall grass, shrubs and thorn bushes. Meteorite expert Tomas Kohout (left) and gamekeeper Kegilwe Mogotsi in Botswana's Central Kalahari Game Reserve.

Then some global researchers from the U.S., Finland and South Africa joined the search and helped to recover a second piece of the asteroid in Botswana's Central Kalahari Game Reserve.

The search teams plan to continue looking for additional pieces of 2018 LA that reached Earth's surface, University of Helsinki officials said.

Trajectory models suggest small asteroid ZLAF9B2 impacted our atmosphere over South Africa on June 2, and USA government sensors and satellites confirmed the event.

Three weeks after an asteroid was spotted streaking toward Earth, and then burning up in a flash of fire in the night sky over Africa, scientists have recovered a single meteorite.

The first meteorite was found on June 23, 2018, after five days of walking and scouting around by a team of geoscientists from the Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BUIST), the Botswana Geoscience Institute (BGI) and from ORI, guided by Jenniskens.

'The discovery of asteroid 2018 LA is only the third time that an asteroid has been discovered to be on an impact trajectory, ' said Paul Chodas, manager of Nasa's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies.

They detected the asteroid with the 60-inch (1.5-meter) telescope at Mt. Lemmon, which is part of the Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona. After mounting a search, an global team of researchers has now found fragments of the asteroid. Image via projectpluto.com.

It was six feet in diameter, and traveling about 10 miles per second at the time it collided with Earth's atmosphere, according to calculations.

Calculations of the landing area were done independently by a United States based group headed by Peter Jenniskens, a subject expert of the NASA sponsored SETI Institute in California, as well as Esko Lyytinen and Jarmo Moilanen of the Finnish Fireball Network (FFN).

Members of the search team that found a meteorite fragment from the asteroid 2018 LA point to the fallen space rock. The asteroid exploded in the atmosphere over southern Africa on June 2, 2018.
