Tour de France: Froome's team comes up short

Chris Froome loses time after crashing into a ditch during stage 1

Jul 09 2018 05:39 pm CET BMC Racing Team has won the third stage's team time trial at the Tour de France.

The last team out on the course was the one with the rider in the overall lead, Bora Hansgrohe, and as they approached the second time check it was clear that Peter Sagan would be surrendering the yellow jersey, the road world champion blowing up moments later, putting it beyond doubt that the lead would change hands.

The Briton had lost 51 seconds to some of his main rivals after a crash in the opening stage but his team's efforts against the clock around Cholet put him back in contention.

The Slovak cyclist has a six-second lead ahead of Gaviria and is another four seconds ahead of Colbrelli in the general classification.

Quick-Step Floors nicked third place in a time of 38:53, while Adam Yates' Mitchelton-Scott team were a further two seconds behind before some much larger time gaps further down the order. "It was a good sprint, slightly uphill in the end, but I had good legs and a good feeling", said Gaviria, only the second Colombian to wear the yellow jersey after Victor Hugo Pena in 2003.

BMC's Richie Porte is level with Froome with their respective teams looking to do well on the team time trial.

It is a measure of just how much success Team Sky have enjoyed at recent Tours de France that when Geraint Thomas missed out on the yellow jersey yesterday by only three seconds he barely shrugged.

"Today puts us right back in the game", said Porte.

And though Sky missed out on victory - and a chance to put Geraint Thomas in the yellow jersey - Froome was able to eradicate the deficit to numerous other contenders.

BMC's win on Monday, their third in a team time trial this year, had several positive outcomes. Through the jury's decision, in the final version as many as 116 riders had the same time as the leg victor, Peter Sagan (4:06:37 hour) i.e.all those who were in the peloton at the time of the crash.

It was also a very satisfying day for Froome, the Kenyan-born Briton ignoring some booing at the start line and making up some of the valuable time he lost on Saturday's first stage.

Title contenders Vincenzo Nibali, Tom Dumoulin, and Romain Bardet are 16 seconds behind Sagan, giving them an early advantage over Froome.

"I feel maybe even better (than last year)".

The Tour resumes tomorrow with the 195 km flat stage four that runs between La Baule and Sarzeau.
