Stray shot kills California woman in Mexico City for wedding anniversary

Tatiana Mirutenko 27 was shot while exiting a restaurant in the Lomas de Chapultepec neighborhood of Mexico City on Monday

An American tourist has been killed by a stray bullet while holidaying in Mexico with her husband to celebrate their one year wedding anniversary. Tatiana Mirutenko of San Francisco was leaving a restaurant with her husband and two friends Saturday morning when she was shot.

Tatiana Mirutenko, 27, was shot while exiting a restaurant in the Lomas de Chapultepec neighborhood of the Mexico capital at about 5:50 a.m.

The intended target was another patron at the taqueria, a 46-year-old bouncer who worked at a bar in another Mexico City neighborhood, the Mexico City prosecutor's office said.

The last post Mirutenko made on Instagram was on July 1- two photos from her wedding day, including a black and white of her and her husband kissing with the caption: "year 1", with a simple heart emoji to punctuate the post.

"We've traveled to Mexico all of our lives", Mirutenko's father, Wasyl, said.

Mirutenko played Division I volleyball at Clemson University and later worked as a senior investor relations analyst at Nektar Therapeutics in San Francisco's Mission Bay district. "We extend our honest condolences to friends and family members of the deceased", the bureau said in a statement.

"We extend our honest condolences to friends and family members of the deceased", the Bureau of Consular Affairs said in a statement. The U.S. Embassy in Mexico City is providing all appropriate consular services to her family. As a mother, we always say things, but she inspired me to be better.

'I'd give my life if she could just come back, ' her mother Natalie added. "Out of respect for the family during this hard time, we have no further comment".

The U.S. State Department issued a travel advisory in March warning travelers to Mexico City to exercise increased caution due to crime. The department has placed no travel restrictions on USA government employees in Mexico City.

"Tatiana was a bright and passionate rising star", the company said in a statement.

"We were devastated to hear the news of Tatiana's death. She will be incredibly missed by all of us at Nektar Therapeutics", Ruddock said.
