Red Bull F1 unable to take podium spot at British Grand Prix

Verstappen blames 80bhp deficit for gap to pole at Silverstone

Max Verstappen feels Aston Martin Red Bull Racing were losing a second on the straights at Silverstone as he qualified fifth for the British Grand Prix.

Silverstone's high-speed nature, particularly with the latest generation of F1 cars, has played more to the strengths of Mercedes and Ferrari and left Red Bull adrift of its Formula 1 rivals.

Verstappen's race ended after he spun out as the result of a brake-by-wire malfunction which caused clutch damage.

As Hamilton battled back through the field having been last on the opening lap, he was up in third but he nor team-mate Valtteri Bottas did not stop for new tyres where the Red Bulls and Ferraris did.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner confirmed it was because the brake-by-wire problem had triggered clutch damage that left the auto stuck in gear.

"I tried to do a one-stop". Then after the second safety auto I braked for Turn 16 and the pedal literally went to the floor, the rear brakes locked up and I spun off the track.

"I lost it between Turns 4 and 6 in Q3", he said about his first run. "It's a real bummer".

"It was tragic. On the straights it's like you are driving in a different series", Max was quoted by PlanetF1 after the race.

"The re-starts were intense but we just didn't have the speed on the straights to do much and behind Ferrari and Mercedes we were just too slow".

"It seems we're definitely not fighting for pole but we'll just try again tomorrow", he said on Friday.

"We lose more than one second on the straights, so this track is getting less and less favourable for us", said Verstappen.

"For tomorrow, it is going to be a bit warmer but still a bit of a struggle compared to the guys ahead", Verstappen added.

"The team then pulled the trigger on a two stop strategy for me and then the safety vehicle came out. It was a joke".

"Obviously if it wasn't Red Bull, [Ferrari and Mercedes are] the two most attractive options".

In times gone by, Silverstone was the flawless track for the Milton Keynes-based team as their dominance in high-speed corners gave them an advantage over their rivals and power was less important.

"This weekend has been very tough for Renault". There is a gap to fill and hopefully with Honda...we have a lot of belief in what they have in the pipeline.
