Original map from Winnie-the-Pooh sells for record-breaking £430,000

REUTERSThe Hundred Acre Wood map was sold for £430,000

The original drawing of the map that appears inside the cover of A.A. Milne's beloved book "Winnie-the-Pooh" sold at a Sotheby's auction for almost $600,000 - a record for any book illustration.

The map appears on the inside cover of the original book, setting the tone for what young readers will encounter: the adventures of a teddy bear named Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends.

The map for A.A. Milne's children's classic, completed in 1926, broke the record for the amount offered for any book illustration at auction, it added.

Previously, the record was held by a drawing of Milne's characters playing Poohsticks, which sold for £314,500.

He hastened to add, though, that this signal should come in the form of a renewed commitment to free trade, not a blunt warning to Trump.

The map was unseen by the public for almost half a century and had featured in the opening pages of AA Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh, as well as in the opening sequence of the Disney film Winnie-the-Pooh and The Honey Tree.

Four other original Pooh illustrations were sold alongside the map, with the five fetching a combined total of 917,500 pounds compared with a 310,000 to 440,000-pound estimate.

As well as depicting the book's woodland world, the map also features Milne's much-loved characters including Eeyore, Winnie-The-Pooh and Christopher Robin. Below the map, Christopher Robin has scrawled the words "Drawn by me and Mr. Shepard Helpd".

It was first sold by Sotheby's in 1968 for £650, before the auction house sold it again to a private collector two years later for £1,700.
