NASA Spacecraft Picked Up Weird Plasma 'Sounds' As It Plunged Into Saturn

There's Spooky Plasma Music Traveling From Saturn to its Weirdest Moon

The celestial song was recorded by NASA's Cassini probe as it travelled between Saturn and it's tiny icy moon Enceladus.

Sulaiman et al found a powerful interaction of plasma waves moving from Saturn to its rings and Enceladus.

Plumes of water vapor that spurt from Enceladus interact with Saturn's magnetic field, according to NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology.

NASA's Glen Nagle says the Earth also sings to our moon - but there isn't much evidence the moon sings back.

While we know that there is no "sound" as such traveling between Saturn and Enceladus since that would require air, radio waves can and do travel through space, and we are able to pick up plasma waves from probes like Cassini.

NASA said the plasma waves were detected on September 2, 2017, about two weeks before Cassini ended its mission with a bang by deliberately crashing into Saturn.

"In other words, Cassini detected electromagnetic waves in the audio frequency range - and on the ground, we can amplify and play those signals through a speaker", they explained.

"The recording time was compressed from 16 minutes to 28.5 seconds".

Sulaiman is lead author of two papers on this discovery.

The guttural hissing sounds that were captured between Saturn and Enceladus are just as eerie as those that you might hear emanating from an aurora, which is perhaps why they have been given the name of an auroral hiss.
