N.J. man infected with flesh-eating bacteria while crabbing, could lose limbs

Angel Perez 60 contracted the disease while crabbing in a New Jersey river according to his daughter

A 60-year-old man contracted a flesh-eating bacteria while crabbing in the Maurice River last week, and now he could have his limbs amputated to stop the infection.

"I have another family member that goes to that spot; she now has a rash on her leg, and her leg (had) painful swelling", Perez-Dilan said "She got antibiotics right away". According to NJ.com, doctors say Perez has Vibrio, a flesh-eating bacteria that is often found during warm times of the year in salt water. The next day, he noticed swelling and scratches on his leg, according to WPIX.

The National Institutes of Health says that while Vibrio bacteria "is one of the more infrequent causes of necrotizing fasciitis", it has a 26 percent mortality rate because it rapidly spreads and it is hard to diagnose.

He was in the ICU at Cooper University Hospital on Monday. It's in a group commonly known as flesh-eating bacteria.

'He is in critical condition, ' Perez-Dilan told the website.

Caroline Flack confirms SPLIT from fiancé Andrew Brady
Love Island host Caroline Flack has revealed that she has called off her engagement to Apprentice star Andrew Brady . It's what I've been looking for. "My life was complete before you came into it - a man doesn't complete your life".

"It was swelling so much, it looked like a prosthetic", Perez-Dilan said.

"He's been praising God nonstop", Perez-Dilan said. About one in seven people with the infection dies, according to the CDC, and limb amputations are common.

"Typically, when you get an infection like this, it enters through an existing wound and can spread throughout the bloodstream and can cause other complications such as necrotizing fasciitis, which he unfortunately got", said Cumberland County Health Officer Megan Sheppard.

His daughter, Dilena Perez-Dilan, says the infection has spread to all of her father's limbs and his blood, and his arms and legs have turned black in color.

Perez's family say the swelling and pain simply got worse. "He's just happy to have a second chance". Mr. Perez has Parkinson's disease, so he is at a greater risk for problems. With the prognosis still unknown, the Perez family is praying Angel leaves the hospital with his life and limbs. We think water is safe. But the New Jersey Health Department says if anyone has open cuts or scrapes, it's best to stay out of the brackish water.
