Loss to Anderson brings a Wimbledon first for Federer

Novak Djokovic speaks out on narrowly escaping Wimbledon scheduling nightmare

Anderson had 28 aces, 27 of them coming in the final four sets.

The decider went on serve deep into double figures, before Anderson broke in the decisive 23rd game to set up a chance to serve the match - a chance he duly took. But that turned out to be the least of his worries.

He came into the match having won 32 consecutive sets at Wimbledon, a run he stretched to 34 before faltering.

Federer was the heavy favourite to lift a record ninth title at the All England Club but struggled to make a dent in the Anderson serve, with the eighth seed playing the match of his life.

The women's semi-finals are set for Thursday. Federer eked out a break point at 4-3, Anderson quickly snuffed it out, then Anderson served to stay in the match, and did so to love.

The Swiss walked off the court after defeat at Wimbledon for the first time in two years but it was in unfamiliar surroundings; SW19 authorities scheduled him on No 1 Court for the first time since his 2015 quarter-final against Gilles Simon.

It was his first win against Federer at the fifth attempt and means he is the first player representing South Africa to reach the semi-final here since Kevin Curren in 1983.

Federer had been pursuing a 13th Wimbledon semi-final and a 44th appearance in the last four of a grand slam.

Asked yesterday if he had concerns about noise from the Centre Court crowd, Federer light-heartedly replied: "I'm more concerned the World Cup final will have issues because the Wimbledon final is going on". I had moments where I was great, I felt like I was reading his serve, other moments where I don't know where the hell I was moving to. Beating Roger Federer will be one to remember, certainly in such a close match. Not just an experience, but a challenge that I've set for myself. You have to have that mindset. "I just gave it my all and I'm ecstatic to get through that".

It will be Djokovic's first semi-final at a major since the 2016 French Open when he completed the career Grand Slam. The tennis begins at about 2.10pm with the football kicking off at 4pm.

Djokovic, seeded 12th, incurred a warning for throwing his racket and was clearly frustrated, complaining of "double standards" when Nishikori was not punished for a racket throw.

"The umpire said he didn't see".

"I think Rafa and Del Potro had to be on Centre Court", Murray told BBC.

"He said he thinks it damaged the court".
