Johnson and Davis resignations 'matters for Theresa May'

Theresa May and David Davis

Theresa May has moved to shore up her position following the shock resignation of Boris Johnson with the appointment of Jeremy Hunt as the new Foreign Secretary.

"There was a feeling that there's a need to defend the prime minister from somebody who has made a decision for his own benefit".

Hunt, who backed the "remain" side in Britain's 2016 European Union membership referendum, favors keeping close economic ties to the bloc, after the United Kingdom leaves next year.

"The Government have no doubt that this support will continue", it said.

The resignation of two British cabinet ministers are matters for the Prime Minster Theresa May, a spokesperson for the Taoiseach has said.

Pro-Europeans want to retain close economic ties with the bloc and its market of 500 million people, while some Brexit supporters want a clean break to make it possible to strike new trade deals around the world.

"What the prime minister is proposing is a way in which we can ensure we don't have. friction with our trade with the European Union. and here is a practical way in which we can do that", Gauke said.

One take is that Davis leaving clears the way for a softer Brexit and that might be the right call but something has been brewing before this latest whipsaw.

The New Statesman says Leadsom is also "in with a shout" for the leadership, but the Daily Mirror points out that her failed bid to beat May in 2016 could damage her chances.

There are no recent precedents for two secretaries of state and a junior minister resigning in the space of 24 hours in protest at the government's central policy.

Chris Heaton-Harris has been appointed to the Brexit department after a raft of resignations.

.

Maasikas, who is the Estonian Deputy Minister for EU Affairs and also sits on the EU General Affairs Council, said the Brexit talks will once again be discussed on 20 July.

"I'd have to deliver this. I'd have to do something I didn't believe in", he told the BBC.

The loss of two senior ministers and the anger among Brexit-supporting backbench lawmakers makes May's position as leader increasingly tenuous.

Under Conservative Party rules, a confidence vote in a leader can be triggered if 15 percent of Conservative lawmakers - now 48 - write a letter requesting one.

Labour MP Andrew Adonis said Raab's appointment could spell the "death" of the Tory leader, while writer and editor Hitcham Yezza said Brexit has now become even more "shambolic". He urged May to abandon her plans and take a tougher line with Brussels.

In his letter of resignation, he described her readiness to accept a "common rulebook" with the European Union in trade on goods and her proposal of "impractical and undeliverable customs arrangements" as being like "sending our vanguard into battle with the white flags fluttering above them".
