Japan's Nishikori beats out-of-sorts Kyrgios to reach last 16

Wimbledon

"I was struggling. I didn't serve well".

Despite saving three match points in the last game, it was nearly inevitable the match would end with a Kyrgios unforced error. I don't think it's very good.

Neither the crowd nor a big mistake by the umpire could unglue Djokovic, though, as the three-time champion won 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 to reach the round of 16 for the 11th time.

With both players struggling physically and looking nervy, the breaker ebbed and flowed with no player able to deliver the killer blow until Nishikori finally stepped up to take it 12-10.

Former World No. 1 Djokovic has a 13-2 winning record against the Japanese player.

Kei Nishikori clinched victory in the fourth round of Wimbledon for the first time in his career Monday after surviving a tough test against Ernests Gulbis, beating the Latvian 4-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (10), 6-1.

"He's always like a big war for me. I always enjoy playing against him", said Nishikori, who has beaten the Serb just twice in 15 meetings.

Nishikori said he nearly "couldn't see the ball" in the fading light towards the end, while Kyrgios's attitude was criticised by BBC commentator Andrew Castle, who said: "Kyrgios has decided that's enough. you cannot win a Grand Slam over a two-week period against the best players in the world with this sort of attitude".

Gulbis, ranked 130 and who came through qualifying, had shocked fourth seeded German Alexander Zverev in the third round. I kind of panicked a little bit. Everything kind of just went south, I guess.

Nishikori's win, which came at the 10th attempt, made him the first Japanese since Shuzo Matsuoka in 1995 to secure a quarterfinal berth at the All England Club. That precipitated a lengthy absence from the tour and a worrying dip in form and confidence.

Djokovic said the past year had been frustrating, but his recent performances have left him optimistic. "I asked him. So, yes, it was quite a odd decision from (the) chair umpire, but it happens". I didn't feel comfortable on the court for long time. I didn't feel good from the ground.

Djokovic's run to the Queen's final on the eve of Wimbledon was his first appearance in a championship match since Eastbourne nearly 12 months earlier. "I wasn't aggressive enough", said Gulbis. Indian Wells, Miami, most of the clay-court season. "A couple (of) guys really, you know, pretending they were coughing and whistling while I was bouncing the ball more or less to the end of the match at that end where I received the time violation".

"I was a top 3 player for so many years in a row - it was quite a odd feeling for me not to be able to deliver my game".
