'It's terrible': Stunned Federer feeling low after Wimbledon shock

The Latest: Federer pushed off Centre Court at Wimbledon

Kevin Anderson produced an astonishing fightback from two sets down to beat eight-time champion Roger Federer 2-6, 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-4, 13-11 in a quarterfinal cliffhanger at Wimbledon yesterday.

Anderson was sticking to his guns, though, and after saving match point the eighth seed secured another break of the Federer serve and snatched a set back.

Federer won the first meeting 6-4, 6-4 at the Paris Masters indoor hard-court event in 2013; he won 7-5, 6-1 at Indian Wells in 2014; 6-3, 7-5 on the clay in Rome in 2015 and 6-1, 6-1 in Cincinnati later that year.

Anderson then held the 24th game to clinch one of tennis' most famous victories.

The 12-time major victor defeated Kei Nishikori 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 on Centre Court to set up a clash on Friday with either world No 1 Rafael Nadal or Juan Martin del Potro.

In his first Wimbledon semifinal, Anderson will face 2016 runner-up Milos Raonic or ninth-seeded John Isner.

The official twitter account of Wimbledon posted a video of Federer playing the shot, asking the International Cricket Council (ICC) to rate it.

Federer came into the match having won 32 straight sets while not dropping a service game since last year's Wimbledon.

Kevin Anderson, who played at the University of IL, knocked defending champion Roger Federer out of Wimbledon Wednesday.

Royal Observatory Greenwich Astronomer Dhara Patel told Express.co.uk there are a number of explanations for why this happens. But don't worry, it's not a sign of the apocalypse but a natural wonder caused when Earth passes between the sun and moon.

Not since Wayne Ferreira in 1994 had a South African man made the Wimbledon quarter-finals, but Anderson wasn't overawed by the occasion.

On Sunday, spectators were given a thrill when Nadal, Federer and Novak Djokovic all practiced side-by-side at the same time.

Asked if losing to Anderson would spur him to return and make amends next year, Federer hinted he didn't plan to walk away just yet.

The last time he won as many consecutive sets was in 2005 and 2006 at the height of his dominance. The 20-time grand slam victor lost the set 6-4 as Anderson's relentless, powerful serve sent the match into a fifth and deciding set. It's just different. I think this gives Anderson a better chance.

Djokovic secured that game with a forehand victor, then saved two game points on Nishikori's serve before converting his first match point with a forehand down the line.

The duo had met each other at the All England Club in 2011, when Federer was chasing his seventh Wimbledon title, and fans across the globe had gone into a frenzy seeing the legends in one frame.

"His consistency, the way he plays such great tennis week in and week out", said Anderson.

"I don't think it really mattered, to be honest".

Anderson broke Federer to go up 12-11 and reached his first Wimbledon semifinal by denying Federer his 44th major semifinal.
