Fobbed off: woman accidentally steals auto for two weeks after key mix-up

An Ontario Woman Stole A Car By Mistake And Didn’t Realize For 2 Weeks

The saga began in late June when a woman rented a black Nissan Sentra from Enterprise Rent-A-Car company in Cornwall, Ont., about an hour west of Montreal.

The woman accidentally stole his auto after driving to Walmart right after picking up her rental Nissan Sentra from the local Enterprise Rental vehicle. She mistook the mans 2015 Infiniti QX50 as her vehicle after doing her shopping and drove off.

It turns out the auto that she thought was her rental vehicle was actually a 2015 black Infiniti QX50, a hatchback - not the sedan she had originally rented.

The woman - who police described as being "confused and a wee bit embarrassed herself" - contacted police, explaining that she had accidentally taken an Infinity and driven around in it for two weeks. It was only when she complained about the vehicle's unkempt interior as well as the fact there was a set of golf clubs inside the auto that things became a little clearer.

Both cars use a key fob, which doesn't require a key to start the auto. After all, she had no inkling she'd stolen the auto she was driving. And she didn't realize her mistake for another two weeks. The manager of the vehicle rental agency then realized what happened as the man whose auto had been stolen had come into the same Enterprise to rent a replacement.

The vehicle that the woman originally rented was a Nissan Sentra sedan.

Upon returning the vehicle the woman explained her frustrations with the auto rental agency.

The keys she turned in belonged to a Nissan Infiniti rather than a Sentra, leaving the manager "slightly confused", said police. They even tried to explain that the model she was trying to return wasn't on file but she apparently did not want to hear it. "And she was giving the manager the business on renting her a dirty vehicle", MacKay said.

The stolen vehicle at the centre of the story is a 2015 black Infiniti QX50. The owner said he had ducked into Walmart and returned to find his auto missing from the parking lot, according to police.

That's when the manager called the police.

MacKay said he has been an officer for 11 years and has never experienced anything like this, but is glad that it had a happy ending.

At this time, the owner of the Infiniti returned to the parking lot and discovered his vehicle was missing, to which he reported it stolen to local police.
