Iceberg breaks off glacier in Greenland

Greenland's Helheim Glacier has lost a massive chunk of ice to the ocean.

New York University has condensed the video into just under two minutes so you can experience the moment for yourself.

A team of scientists has captured on video a four-mile iceberg breaking away from a glacier in eastern Greenland.

The glacier would stretch from lower Manhattan to Midtown in NYC, as illustrated here. Denise Holland, a research team field manager with NYU, caught the eye-opening occurrence on video, which condenses 30 minutes of activity down to about 90 seconds.

Holland and his team managed to capture dramatic footage of the process by which this retreat takes place, something known as calving. "By capturing how it unfolds, we can see, first-hand, its breath-taking significance".

Oil prices at highest level in three years
On the New York Mercantile Exchange, West Texas Intermediate futures were trading up 0.6% at $74.31 a barrel. USA gasoline prices are at a four-year-high this year as a result of the higher price of crude.

"Global sea-level rise is both undeniable and consequential", explains David Holland, a professor at NYU's Courant Institute of Mathematics and NYU Abu Dhabi, who led the research team.

The video shows a tabular (wide and flat) iceberg separate, then travel down the fjord where it smashes into another iceberg. Meanwhile, smaller pinnacle icebergs, which are tall and thin, can be seen calving off and flipping over. "The better we understand what's going on means we can create more accurate simulations to help predict and plan for climate change".

The impact causes the first to break up and flip over.

While calving is a normal part of how glaciers behave, by closely monitoring how they break off into icebergs we can better understand the effects of global warming on the sea levels.

Earth's biggest glaciers are in frozen Antarctica, and their breakup would be catastrophic for sea level rise; the loss of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet would release enough water to raise global sea levels by almost 10 feet (3 meters). But there is much that scientists have yet to learn about how and why this large-scale breakage happens, which makes it hard to predict when glaciers will fall apart, and how much that glacier disintegration will affect sea levels over time, David Holland, leader of the research team and a professor at New York University's Courant Institute of Mathematics and NYU Abu Dhabi, told Live Science.
