Murray gets Wimbledon boost with first win on comeback trail

Feliciano Lopez drops out from the Top 50 for the first time since

Murray lost on his return from injury when he was beaten in three sets by Nick Kyrgios at Queen's last week and his last victory had been against Benoit Paire in straight sets in the fourth round at Wimbledon last July.

"I'm coming back from a very serious injury which is not easy".

The Scot looked hugely relieved when Wawrinka, himself trying to get back up to speed after knee surgery, double-faulted to end the one hour 17 minute contest in front of a sell-out crowd on centre court.

"I'm not putting any pressure on myself to make that decision after one or two matches here because I don't need to". If I don't, then obviously I won't play.

Quizzed court-side on the challenges of facing the likes of Wawrinka and Edmund early in competitions after tumbling down the rankings while injured, Murray revealed he was glad to get a win out of the way early. I can decide when I want.

His movement looked smooth and the world number 156 will go into a second-round clash with new British number one Kyle Edmund in good spirits, providing there is no adverse reaction. "But the last two matches that I have played have been positive in many respects".

Another break a couple of games later allowed Murray to wrap up the first set shortly after, and midway through the second set he was back on the offensive, clinching his third break of the match for a 3-1 lead to leave Wawrinka on the brink of defeat.

Another Briton is also through to the second round, after Jay Clarke beat Ryan Harrison of the United States 6-4, 6-1. Harrison is ranked 58th.

Sixth-seed David Ferrer eased through with victory over Italian qualifier Matteo Berrettini and Gilles Muller was shocked by Australia's John Millman who came through in three sets on the South Coast.

In the women's tournament, there was a scare for Czech defending champion and second seed Karolina Pliskova but she survived to beat Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-4 2-6 6-3.

The second-seeded Pliskova hit nine aces in the first set and seemed on her way to another comfortable victory.

The Swiss star threw everything he had at Murray in the eighth game, earning his first four break points of the match, but Murray looked composed and confident as he saved them all.

Pliskova broke again in the final game, sealing the match when Pavlyuchenkova hit the ball long.

The former world No.1 looked crisp and confident on his return from hip surgery in January as he powered past fellow three-time grand slam victor Wawrinka 6-1, 6-3 in the first round of the Nature Valley International.
