Security Researcher Finds Way to Brute Force Locked iPhone Running iOS 11

Apple iOS Passcode Crack Revealed by Security Researcher. Watch the Exploit in Action

By "modding" the iOS, you can download applications from third-party websites and stores, customize the interface of the device, etc.

Apple's protections against incorrect passcode entry include longer and longer delays between the entry of each wrong code as well as erasing the phone after 10 incorrect password attempts.

Last week, Chinese security researcher, Liang Chen, shared a video on Twitter demonstrating iOS 12 beta 1 allegedly jailbroken, running on an iPhone X. Hickey's tool, however, is able to bypass that requirement by sending the passcodes all at once, as opposed to one at a time.

However, Hickey found that, if an iPhone or iPad was plugged in, any keyboard input would trigger a unsafe and disabling interrupt request. An attacker could create a massive string of inputs and send them all at once and iOS would allow an endless string of guesses without erasing the device. When the keyboard inputs occur, it triggers an interrupt request that takes priority over everything else happening on the device. Thus, using this brute force attack results in the handset working on the strong of four-digit passcodes you've inputted and unlocking the phone before the device is wiped.

An English bulldog who has muscular, rounded front legs and an underbite has been crowned the World's Ugliest Dog . Last year's victor was Martha - a 125lb Neapolitan Mastiff with gas and a droopy face.

It seems that the hack works by sending all possible passcodes to the device, from 0000 to 9999, in one long string, forcing the iOS platform to iterate through each number in one process, therefore getting around the entry-attempt restrictions. Once implemented, the feature will restrict USB access on iOS devices after the iPhone or iPad has been locked for one hour, making the device a black box if it's not cracked in the first 60 minutes.

Companies like Grayshift help police bypass the passcodes on locked iPhones. Because the iPhone takes three to five seconds to process each passcode, it would take an hour to go through just 100 different passcodes. In order to access that encrypted information, iPhones and iPads require users to enter a four- or six-digit passcode to protect the device that they choose during set-up.

That's thought to have been one of the reasons why Apple is rolling out a new feature called USB Restricted Mode in its upcoming iOS 12 update, which is said to make it far more hard for police or hackers to get access to a person's device - and their data. A spokesperson for Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

"I suspect others will find it - or have already found it", he said. You can also send PGP email with the fingerprint: 4D0E 92F2 E36A EC51 DAAE 5D97 CB8C 15FA EB6C EEA5.
