Koko was born at the San Francisco Zoo on July 4, 1971; her full name was Hanabi-ko, Japanese for "fireworks child", in honor of her birthdate. "The gorilla was only a few years old when she made the gesture-sweeping a paw diagonally across her chest as if tracing a royal slash".

In the late 1990s, Koko participated in an online chat with thousands of people on AOL.

Koko appeared in several documentaries and twice in National Geographic in 1978 and 1985.

Koko was also part of a lawsuit when two former caretakers said they had been fired to refusing to bare their breasts to the gorilla, who apparently loved nipples.
