Kim Kardashian defends wearing hair in braids: 'I'm not tone deaf'

Kim first addressed her own braids, which she wore to the MTV Movie Awards. Fulani braids are a type of braiding that originated in West Africa, and several white celebrities have been accused of culturally appropriating the style.

For the record, the doting reality star mom doesn't feel that she did anything wrong when it came to making her daughter happy.

"I actually didn't see backlash", Kim told Bustle on Wednesday, though it should be noted there definitely was some. I actually did that look because North said she wanted braids and asked if I would do them with her.

After receiving loads of backlash behind her daughter's new tresses, Kim revealed in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter exactly why she allowed North to straighten her hair.

She said: "I remember the backlash when I had the blonde hair and that I called them "Bo Derek braids".

She added, "Maybe if I had come out and explained that from the beginning instead of calling them 'Bo Derek braids, ' then it wouldn't have gotten such backlash".

"She and [her cousin] Penelope had a unicorn party, so I said, "'You can do it for your party and you can do it when we go to NY if you like it.' She liked it, so we did it when we went to NY too and that's it", Kim said.

She continued, saying that "in no way am I ever trying to disrespect anyone's culture" with the look, reiterating that her daughter was "so excited" when they got them together.

In spite of the outcry she's received for her beauty choices, Kardashian said she'll continue to encourage North to explore and experiment with different styles. "It's amusing, because online everyone thought that we pressed it and did this whole thing".
