Injured Halep withdraws from Eastbourne International

Simona Halep

World number one Simona Halep has pulled out of next week's Nature Valley International in Eastbourne as she looks to regain full fitness ahead of Wimbledon.

The Romanian, who won the French Open earlier this month, said she had "yet to recover" from pain and inflammation in her Achilles tendon sustained at Roland Garros.

Halep's withdrawal leaves four top-10 players in the Eastbourne event, including last year's champion Karolina Pliskova and runner-up Caroline Wozniacki.

Halep overcame a shaky start to her Paris campaign, defeating Alison Riske in three sets before storming to the final with terrific wins over Elise Mertens, Angelique Kerber, and Garbine Muguruza.

Romanian Simona Halep, victor of the last Grand Slam Roland Garros, will not participate in the Eastbourne tennis tournament scheduled for next week, the organizing committee announced here today.

"I have been advised by my doctors that it needs more rest while continuing treatment".

But Halep is set to go into the Wimbledon without a competitive match on grass under her belt after announcing that she will not play in Sussex.
