House Republicans Gear Up For Failure On Immigration

Fact check: Donald Trump overstates scope of order on border policy that keeps families together

"Does anybody really believe that incarcerating children with their parents is the solution?" said Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington state. Pete Aguilar, D-Calif., told McClatchy. It is immoral to lock up children for an undetermined amount of time while families wait through a drawn-out legal process. Children are separated from their parents, held in separate facilities and then sent to a shelter and eventually to stay with sponsors. But over the past few days, people across the world reacted with shock and revulsion to reports and images of children as young as eight months being separated from parents and held in structures that can best be described as cages at detention facilities run by the US Border Patrol.

Republican US Representatives Ralph Norman and Mark Meadows, prominent members of the conservative Freedom Caucus, told reporters they did not think either of the bills had enough support to pass the Republican-controlled House. "I didn't like the sight or the feeling of families being separated".

Top Democratic leader Congressman Joe Crowley said while this order stops the separation of children from their parents, it does not end the administration's despicable policy of unreasonably detaining asylum seekers and families fleeing violence.

There's no reasonable expectation that the so-called "compromise" bill - which would have allocated $25 billion in funding for the border wall while also offering a path to citizenship to children brought to the United States illegally - has any chance at passage.

And by Thursday morning, instead of the supportive Trump tweet that House GOP leaders had been angling for, Trump asked what the objective was of the House voting on immigration bills if they needed nine Senate Democrats to also support a bill. Democrats are expected to vote against the bill but many Republicans, including a group of moderate lawmakers, are expected to vote for the bill.

Yet it's disunity within the Republican ranks that has sunk every effort to pass broad immigration legislation in the House for more than a decade, and those divisions were on display Thursday.

"The lawmakers have to sit down and they have to do something because our country can not continue to run like this", Mr Trump said.

Sources indicate that furious Amrabat termed the incident as sad, adding that the tournament is 'World Cup and not a circus'. On the other hand, we want to respect the fact that the doctor of the team has the sole responsibility for his players".

He said he was looking into whether the court could block deportation of parents until they have been reunited with their children, and whether it could force the Trump administration to reunite those separated. "First, the Court should provide a limited exemption from its construction of the Flores Settlement Agreement's release provisions so that ICE may detain alien minors who have arrived with their parent or legal guardian together in ICE family residential facilities", a press release from the DOJ read.

The executive order said the administration will build or find existing locations for families while their cases wind their way through the court system. The differing bills could set up a conflict when they go to conference between the two chambers. "I don't know how they're going to go about fixing that".

"But when they opened the door, we saw around 20 to 30 10-year-old boys in one of these chain-link enclosures, and they were crying and screaming and asking for their mothers".

"The Obama administration also sought to modify it, which the courts denied", Steglich said.

"We have zero tolerance for people who enter our country illegally", he said. "We reject this false choice".

But with two-thirds of the public saying they opposed breaking up families, and religious leaders including Pope Francis calling it morally unacceptable, Trump changed his mind. But immigrants complained of poor conditions and isolation at the centers.
