As Optus continues to face outrage over its sub-standard FIFA World Cup broadcast, Chief Executive, Allen Lew, has announced it's passing six games onto free-TV provider, SBS, over the coming days as a "failsafe". The second night of problems prompted a late night emergency meeting among top Optus execs and technicians, according to the Fairfax report by journalist Adam Turner.

While SBS had been the host broadcaster for previous World Cups, Optus won the exclusive rights then faced a barrage of complaints as the tournament got underway and subscribers to Optus Sport were met with a series of crashes, connection problems and other issues during the initial games for people trying to watch on a smartphone or tablet.

"I have spoken with the Optus CEO, Allen Lew", Turnbull tweeted.

Mr Long said the World Cup streaming problems was causing massive damage to Optus's brand even though its core network, mobile, was not broken.

In response, Mr Lew said in a statement that the decision to temporarily broaden SBS' broadcast rights was "made in the interest of football fans across Australia".

When asked about the prospect of refunds yesterday Mr Lew said his company would "make a public announcement about that once we announce what we are going to deliver in two days".

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said services had to be fit for the goal and deliver what was promised.

The SingTel subsidiary which has secured the rights to broadcast/stream all Russian Federation 2018 matches has come under fire, as its digital platform Optus Yes could not handle the weekend demand for World Cup matches.

"We absolutely put a lot of investment into ensuring that we can deliver the best possible experience", Mr Sheridan said.

"At this stage, Optus is saying they've fixed the problem", Ebeid said.

"In light of this Optus has announced that it will simulcast the next two nights of 2018 FIFA World Cup matches with SBS".

"SBS is very limited in things like its advertising revenue".

"It enabled us to retain the World Cup, where we may not have been able to afford to do it on our own", Ebeid told radio station SEN.
