A 'Roseanne' Spinoff Without Roseanne Is Closer to Happening

John Goodman's glib response to Roseanne's cancellation may surprise and shock you

ABC hasn't given up on the proposed Roseanne reboot spinoff, even as they try to figure out a way to make it happen without disgraced star Roseanne Barr keeping some of the profits considering she helped create the original concept. Sources tell the outlet that Barr is so distraught that she has "broken down" on the phone during calls to cast and crew members, and that they have all listened to her apologies.

While the actress did not create the series, her specific credit is "based upon a character created by Barr". The source notes that there remains a lot of confusion by those who know Barr, because the racist behavior exhibited by her on Twitter is not the woman they knew.

Executive producer Dave Caplan recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the possibility of writing a new show without Roseanne's character, saying, "I know that [producer Tom Werner] really regretted the fact that we had such a wonderful writing staff together - a real rare collection of talent - and I know he'd like to continue using it in some fashion if that were possible". She is still entitled to the agreed-upon compensation for the first season of her revival, however. Despite previous rumors the continuation might shine a spotlight on Sara Gilbert's Darlene Conner, the network might be pushing of an ensemble nature to the new show.

In early June, Barr tweeted that she "begged" the network not to cancel the show.

The sitcom, that aired on Network Ten in Australia, was sensationally axed last month after Barr sent a racist tweet aimed at former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett that likened her to an ape.

"Please don't compare me2 other people who have said terrible things", Barr, 65, tweeted. "I begged 4 ppls jobs". "I failed2 correctly express myself, & caused pain2 ppl". I made a mistake I wish I hadn't but.don't defend it please. ty. "I understand, tho. It's ok".
