British PM promises Brexit health service boost

Brexit bus £350million per week to NHS

Theresa May announces increased NHS funding.

Writing in the Mail on Sunday, Mrs May said: "Now, as we leave the European Union and stop paying significant annual subscriptions to Brussels, we will have more money to spend on priorities such as the NHS".

While the announcement was welcomed by the BMA and chief executive of NHS England, others questioned whether increasing the health service budget by 3.4 per cent a year was enough to stave off a crisis after years of real-terms cuts.

The NHS has been struggling to cope with funding shortages in recent years, particularly during the flu-ridden winter months.

She repeated her claim that part of the increase will be funded by a "Brexit dividend" - a suggestion which has been widely attacked as unrealistic, even by some Conservatives.

By 2023/24 there will be £20 billion more a year being spent on the NHS "in real terms", Prime Minister Theresa May has revealed. The respected Institute for Fiscal Studies has spelled out the realitiesof future healthcare spending.

But Mr Hunt said ministers "happen not to agree with the IFS views", even though they are based on the projections of the Government's own Office for Budget Responsibility.

Shadow chancellor John McDonnell told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: 'We need to have confidence in what's being said.

Labour health spokesman Anas Sarwar called the additional funding a "sticking plaster" but said any Barnett consequentials must be passed on to the NHS in Scotland.

"There is no Brexit dividend and an NHS funding plan that relies on such a source would be literally worthless".

We've written before about the concerns raised by think tanks and NHS senior managers that funding specifically targeted at the NHS has come at the same time as other elements of health spending, for example public health, have been falling. And I'm very clear that we need to make sure that in dealing with social care it doesn't put added pressure is on to the NHS.

Taxpayers will have to stump up more cash in order to meet the government's planned £20bn extra cash for the NHS, Theresa May admitted today.

"When we have that plan in November, we will say "This is a great plan, we accept that it is going to lead to improvements in cancer care and mental health and so on".

Tax rises and "economic growth" will also contribute, she said in a speech at the Royal Free hospital on Monday.

"As we approach the 70th anniversary of the NHS, effective innovation and change is needed as well as more money".

In her interview, May - who campaigned against Brexit in 2016 and has been under pressure from hardline Brexiteers ever since to prove her conversion to the cause - drew attention to the fact that her funding announcement exceeded that 350 million pound-per-week figure.

The Scottish Tories' shadow health secretary, Miles Briggs, called on the SNP to ensure "every penny of the extra cash she receives thanks to this United Kingdom government action goes on health care here in Scotland". "It must be a plan that tackles waste, reduces bureaucracy and eliminates unacceptable variation, with all these efficiency savings reinvested back into patient care".
