AMD trolls: will trade Core i7-8086K for Threadripper 1950X

Intel 8086K

If you signed up for Intel's Core i7-8086K giveaway, won one, and have no intent of actually using it, you've got another option open to you now. "Thanks for helping us celebrate the 8086!"

"We appreciate the advancements they've helped drive with the x86 architecture over the last four decades". Now, AMD is firing back at Intel's celebratory release with a giveaway of its own, but with an interesting twist. The first 40 US-based winners of Intel's competition can opt to trade in their shiny new Core i7-8086K for a Ryzen Threadripper 1950X, AMD's flagship 16-core / 32-thread processor. But, we're ready to take it from here.

Our competitor recently kicked off a sweepstakes to celebrate the first 40 years of the x86 processor by giving away 8,086 limited edition processors.

"That's why we're giving 40 performance-hungry enthusiasts in the USA an opportunity to celebrate the next 40 years of high-performance computing by trading in their commemorative processor prize for our CPU that enables you to work, play and create with heavy metal".

AMD explains: "Notified winners of [Intel's] Competitor Sweepstakes, subject to Terms and Conditions, may be able to exchange their prizes for a Ryzen Threadripper 1950X processor".

Rapper XXXTentacion shot and killed in Florida
Several videos posted to social media showed his lifeless body in the driver seat of a vehicle on the side of the road. As the news of his death emerged, many artists from the music industry paid tribute to the late star on Twitter.

However, AMD's Threadripper 1950X is a 16-core (32-thread) monster which can boost to 4GHz, and retails at around $750 in the USA these days (£670 in the United Kingdom, which is around AU$1,200), compared to Intel's chip, which will set you back around $430 (£380 in the United Kingdom, around AU$680).

Intel, amusingly, has swiped back at its smaller rival in good-natured fashion, taking to its social media channels to suggest that 'if you [AMD] wanted an Intel Core i7-8086K processor too, you could have just asked us. What exactly those steps are won't become clear until June 25, so watch that page on that date to find out what you need to do. Intel also announced its own 28-core CPU at the Taipei tech show - however, that didn't go so well.

Intel's sweepstake offering up 8,086 limited edition processors is a great way to celebrate one of the most famous computer chips on the planet.

Earlier this month at Computex, Intel announced its Core i7-8086K processor to commemorate the 40 anniversary of the famed 8086 debut.
