Trump declares North Korea 'no longer a nuclear threat'

President Trump arrives Wednesday morning at Joint Base Andrews after a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore

A quick answer: Probably not.

Trump's Tuesday meeting with Kim produced a wave of U.S. concessions in exchange for vague, nonbinding promises from North Korea, but it did make nuclear war all but inconceivable at the present moment.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, speaking to a small group of reporters in Seoul on Wednesday, said Trump was unambiguous that the exercises would be frozen as long as there were productive, good-faith negotiations with Pyongyang. Mr. Trump said in a news conference in Singapore earlier this week that the issue of human rights did not come up in his meeting with Kim.

It said the two men "gladly accepted" mutual invitations to visit each other's countries.

The Pentagon has said that the next large-scale joint military exercise with South Korea is Ulchi Freedom Guardian, scheduled for fall.

"We will never go back to the past again and never give up on this bold journey". "Now look, with all of that being said, the answer is yes" - referring to Baier's query about Kim having done bad things.

"Make no mistake, we are going to maintain the readiness of our forces in South Korea", said one USA official, speaking on condition of anonymity. "I'm for the United States", Trump clarified. "When Trump realized there wasn't going to be anything substantial in return, it was impossible for him to back out because he had already gone too far".

As Mr Trump returned to the US, he tweeted that Pyongyang no longer posed a nuclear threat - despite critics saying the US President's comments were premature. Absolutely. you used the term major, major disarmament, something like that?

And in spite of Mr Trump's announcement, Onodera said that Japan would continue its military exercises with the U.S. and will continue to improve defences against any possible North Korean strike.

The US stations 28,500 troops in security ally South Korea to protect it from its neighbour, which invaded in 1950 to try to reunify the peninsula by force. -South Korean drills was met with concern.

"Why did South Korea and the US form an alliance and stage military drills before the nuclear crisis flared?"

Vice President Pence on Tuesday afternoon told House and Senate Republican lawmakers that semiannual war games would cease - as long as North Korea follows through on efforts to denuclearize.

State media also said that Trump agreed to lift sanctions and promised unspecified security guarantees. Trump is also wrong to say there was an assumption before he took office that the United States would go to war. A major challenge, according to these officials, is to turn Trump's broad intentions into detailed military guidance. "I'm not trying to unify South Korea and North Korea". "By the way, Korean stuffed cucumber is stuffed with Koreans - Kim is a monster".

The five-hour summit did give Trump and Kim a chance to express optimism and make of show of their new relationship. The joint statement implicitly links denuclearisation to "new US-DPRK relations" and to mutual confidence building (that) can promote the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.

And let's not forget to thank Dennis Rodman, who, five years ago, tried to tell President Obama that Kim Jong-un was open to talking.

Trump then pivoted to fondness for China's leader.

The agreement's aspirational language on denuclearization was a "strategic decision" to reduce pressure on both sides and keep the process going, Hong said.

Pompeo arrived in Seoul on Wednesday evening and will meet Thursday with senior South Korean and Japanese leaders to brief them on the June 12 summit before continuing on to Beijing. "He's an incredible guy", Trump said.
