Tesla To Allow Fully Autonomous Features Beginning In August

Tesla Model 3

Version 9 is the first full update of the software since version 8 was released in 2016.

Autopilot, a form of advanced cruise control, handles some driving tasks though it warns those behind the wheel that they remain responsible for the vehicle's safe operation.

The system has come under scrutiny recently after a number of crashes being reported with the system active, the most prolific of which, resulting in a fatality when it was purportedly enabled.

Enabling "full self-driving" would make good on a promise by electric-vehicle company Tesla two years ago when it began equipping all new cars with the necessary hardware for full self-driving. To date, Autopilot resources have rightly focused entirely on safety.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the SpaceX upgrade package the company will offer for the new Roadster will include around 10 small rocket thrusters that will improve the vehicle's acceleration, maximum speed, braking, and handling.

It has not been made clear which self-driving features would be included in the August update.

The features will be "enabled" on Tesla vehicles equipped with Autopilot 2.0.

Tesla explains that self-driving functionality "is dependent upon extensive software validation and regulatory approval, which may vary widely by jurisdiction".

The Autopilot feature, which includes auto-steering, lane assist and automatic braking must now be used with the driver remaining ready to take full control and keep hands on the wheel.

The price of Musk cutting off analysts? Tesla has been going through trying times with the production of the Model 3 not going as planned but is expected to reach the target soon. It already has a couple different sedans in the Model S and Model 3, along with the Model X SUV.

GM had said it will expand the roll-out of Super Cruise to all its Cadillac models beginning 2020.
