Igor Ivanko Moskva News Agency

Russian women have been warned to refuse sex with foreigners during the World Cup so as to avoid becoming pregnant and raising the child alone.

Perhaps she was anxious that the women would face a future of single parenthood, but then the lawmaker said that it would be fine if they slept with foreigners who were the same race.

She warns that even if these women plan on marrying their foreign baby daddy, their child could end up stuck in another country with no means of getting back to Russian Federation.

Pletnyova claimed lessons should be learned from the USSR era when some local women became pregnant after having then-unusual relationships with foreigners at the Moscow Olympics in 1980.

"It's one thing if they're of the same race but quite another if they're of a different race".

"We should give birth to our own children".

"These children suffer and have suffered, even since Soviet times", Pletnyova, chairwoman of the Family, Women, and Children Affairs Committee, was quoted by radio station Govorit Moskva, as saying.

The term was used during the Soviet era to describe non-white children conceived at global events after relationships between Russian women and men from Africa, Latin America, or Asia.

Urging women to marry "Russian citizens" instead, she said that children risked being "abandoned and just left with their mother" or being taken overseas by their fathers. "Then they come to me at the committee and cry that the child was taken away, removed, and so forth", Pletnyova said.

Pletnyova said she that she would like Russian citizens to get married "out of love regardless of their ethnicity".

Her comments drew criticism and ridicule.

'I wonder what Pletnyova will say when she's reminded of Say No to Racism, ' wrote radio journalist Tatyana Felgenhauer on Twitter, in reference to FIFA's long-running anti-racism campaign.

Pletneva previously criticised the #MeToo campaign against sexual harassment, tentatively spreading in Russian Federation.
