Pompeo Tries to Clean Up Trump’s Messy Claims About North Korea Summit

President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un participate in a signing ceremony Tuesday during a meeting in Singapore

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un expressed readiness to meet with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during his summit with U.S. President Donald Trump, a Japanese government source said Thursday.

"Everybody can now feel much safer than the day I took office", he wrote on Twitter.

"Heading back home from Singapore after a truly wonderful visit", Trump tweeted.

"It's weird but it might be that Kim Jong-un's interests and Donald Trump's interests align".

Of the world's eight known nuclear powers beyond North Korea, three - India, Pakistan and Israel - emerged outside a formal global arms control framework. She reported in April on the first summit between North and South Korea in a decade, and then on Trump's meeting with Kim. -South Korean war games, without getting much in return.

'No, it is not drawing down at all, ' Trump told Fox News when asked about that part of his agreement with Kim.

While Trump claimed a historic breakthrough at the most significant diplomatic event of his presidency, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, was more measured. "The United States should never catch it allies off guard, as seems to be the case with President Trump's announcement", she says. "We're hopeful that we can achieve that in the two-and-a-half years". After all, if there is no threat, why would the North Koreans need to give up their arsenal?

While Trump was flying back to Washington D.C. aboard Air Force One, North Korean state media began reporting its version of events at the summit, including an apparent pledge by Trump to stop joint military exercises with South Korea while a nuclear accord is negotiated. Even if North Korea has little incentive to actually denuclearize, it has many incentives to hint at forward progress. "We are going to get complete denuclearization; only then will there be relief from the sanctions", he said.

On the eve of the summit, Pompeo emphasized that sanctions would remain until North Korea delivered "CVID", and acronym for complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization. "The V matters", he said.

Based on how the system interprets that behavior, it may adjust how it arranges a match with a driver, the application said. It's still unclear how the patent, if approved, would be applied, and whether Uber would make use of it at all.

"He (Trump) made it very clear that the condition precedent for the exercises not to proceed was for productive, good faith negotiations being ongoing", Pompeo told reporters. First he insisted, "It's in the statement. You're just wrong about that".

"Let me assure you that "complete" encompasses verifiable in the minds of everyone concerned".

Now that's frankly ludicrous.

'I believe he's going to live up to that document, ' Trump said after a day that included almost 5 hours of face time with Kim. But South Korea, Japan, and the US have long maintained that the exercises are defensive in nature.

"One should heavily discount some things that are written in other places ... including from some of your colleagues", Pompeo told reporters Wednesday. While the president repeatedly described the document he and Mr Kim signed as "comprehensive", at 426 words it is anything but - and there is no indication of when or how Mr Kim will follow through on any of his promises.

Christopher Hill, chief USA negotiator with North Korea in the George W. Bush administration, suggested in an interview that it's "a little premature" for Trump to say Kim is someone the US can trust. "You think our country's so innocent?"

Trump's tweets pointed to one of the chief gains at the summit from the U.S. point of view - that its scheduling and the establishing of a relationship between the President and Kim have eased fears that the two sides are on a slide toward a disastrous war. "I could go through a lot of nations where a lot of bad things were done".

Trump's intense personalization of the 70-year conflict creates new risks in a relationship historically fraught with violence, misunderstanding and outright deceit.
