Palestinians urge United Nations to condemn Israel over Gaza

UN Assembly approves resolution blaming Israel for Gaza violence | TheHill

Haley expressed optimism, however, about the number of countries that supported the US amendment to condemn Hamas.

The U.N. General Assembly on Wednesday passed a resolution condemning Israel's use of excessive force on Palestinian civilians.

The 193-member assembly approved the resolution by a vote of 120-8, with 45 nations abstaining.

"As we work to improve the daily lives of the citizens of Gaza and the return of our soldiers and our citizens, we must act to take advantage of the positive changes taking place in the region in order to promote a genuine and lasting peace", he said.

Amid worldwide condemnation of its use of lethal force, Israel said numerous dead were militants and that the Israeli army was repelling attacks on the border fence between Israel and Gaza.

We need protection for our civilian population.

At least 129 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire during protests near the border with Gaza that began at the end of March.

Palestinian Ambassador Riyad Mansour said Tuesday night that he is lobbying 191 member states - all but the USA and Israel - and expects to win.

The United Nations General Assembly votes to adopt a draft resolution to deplore the use of excessive force by Israeli troops against Palestinian civilians at U.N. headquarters in NY, U.S., June 13, 2018.

The resolution, backed by Turkey on behalf of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and Algeria on behalf of the Arab League, deplored "the use of any excessive, disproportionate and indiscriminate force by the Israeli forces against Palestinian civilians in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem", and demanded Israel "refrain from such actions". "It blames everything on Israel", Haley said.

Haley condemned the adopted resolution as "morally bankrupt".

While Security Council resolutions are legally binding, General Assembly resolutions are not, although assembly spokesman Brenden Varma stressed Wednesday that they do reflect "political will" as well as global opinion.

For the Palestinians, the resolution's key provision is a request to U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to make proposals within 60 days "on ways and means for ensuring the safety, protection and well-being of the Palestinian civilian population under Israeli occupation", including on "an worldwide protection mechanism".

The permanent observer of the Palestinian mission to the United Nations, ambassador Riyad Mansour said that the USA amendment was offered in "bad faith" and said that the "illegal, belligerent, military occupation is the primary source and root cause of the recurrent and emergent crises we face".

Australia, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Solomon Islands and Togo joined Israel and the USA in voting against the resolution.

"The resolution is one-sided, makes not one mention of Hamas which routinely initiates violence", the USA envoy said during the debate preceding the vote, adding that "What makes Gaza different is that attacking Israel is their favorite political sport".

Brett Bruen, a former Obama administration official and president of Global Situation Room, told CBS News at the United Nations on Wednesday that US actions in the Middle East are "costly for Israel, which has grown further isolated" as the USA irritates allies and emboldens adversaries.

"By supporting this resolution you are colluding with a terrorist organization, by supporting this resolution you are empowering Hamas", Danon said.
